A SYSTEM THAT GIVES BACK

Enmeshed is built on a simple idea: the systems we design should give back more than they take.

By bringing together reclaimed technology, natural materials and living systems, the installation explores what happens when human design begins to follow the logic of nature. Rather than extracting value and discarding what remains, it demonstrates an alternative approach, where materials are reintroduced, systems are interconnected and outcomes are designed to extend beyond their original use.

The Same Principle

At its core, Enmeshed draws a parallel between two connected systems: the human-built world wide web, and the underground mycelium networks that sustain natural ecosystems.

While one is engineered and the other biological, both operate through exchange, shared resource and mutual benefit. Mycelium networks redistribute nutrients across entire ecosystems, supporting growth, resilience and balance. In the same way, digital networks rely on connection, data exchange and interdependence to function at scale.

Enmeshed brings these two systems together, not as a comparison, but as a reminder that the most effective models already exist in nature.

The systems we build should give back more than they take, working with natural processes to create something that continues beyond its original form.

BUILT FROM WHAT ALREADY EXISTS

The installation is formed using reclaimed circuitry, organic fibres, lime and living planting. Technology that would typically be discarded is re-used, re-formed and reintroduced as part of a new system.

Each component is selected with intent. Circuit boards become structural and visual elements. Organic fibres provide flexibility and integration. Living planting introduces growth and change over time. Nothing is treated as waste, and nothing is included without purpose.

The result is a structure built entirely from what already exists, demonstrating that value is not created from newness, but from how materials are understood and applied.

CONCEPT TO APPLICATION

Enmeshed is not just an installation. It is a demonstration of how systems can be designed differently when material, process and outcome are considered together.

By following patterns that already exist in nature, it moves beyond concept and into application, showing how regeneration can be built into the way things are made, used and returned.

The answer is not something new. It is something we are learning to recognise and apply.

Built on connection. Designed to give more than it takes.
