Dimitris ‘Dimi’ Koutroumpas is a Somerset-based botanical artist and designer creating sculptural works that combine plants, reclaimed materials and natural processes.
His practice is rooted in transformation, giving new life to discarded materials through organic form, ecological thinking and material experimentation.
Background
Dimi was born in Athens and is now based in Somerset. His work is shaped by a long-standing fascination with folklore, unseen systems and the natural world. Growing up within a traditional religious culture, he developed his own visual language early, drawn to the idea that something deeper exists beneath what is visible.
That perspective continues to inform his work, which explores the relationship between the constructed and the organic, the past and the present, and the visible and invisible forces that connect them.
Work & Approach
Dimi’s work centres on the transformation of discarded materials into living forms. His ‘Nature Spirits’ sculptures, created from repurposed shop mannequins and dressed in foraged natural materials, explore ideas of re-birth and reconnection. First developed during lockdown, they have since been exhibited in both gallery and cathedral settings.
This same thinking extends into his Book Gardens, where discarded books are cut and replanted with succulents and mosses. In both cases, materials are not treated as finished objects, but as starting points for new life.
Across all of his work, the principle is consistent: materials are reused, reworked and returned, rather than discarded.

Material Thinking
Material choice is central to Dimi’s work. His process brings together reclaimed materials, organic fibres and natural compounds to create structures that interact with their environment rather than sit apart from it.
Lime plays a key role, capturing carbon as it sets, filtering pollutants and resisting mould and decay without synthetic treatments. Produced at lower temperatures than cement, it carries a significantly reduced environmental impact before it is even applied.
This approach avoids permanence in favour of return, allowing materials to break down naturally and complete a full cycle without leaving lasting waste behind.
Practice & Process
Dimi’s work is driven by a consistent approach to making, where material, process and outcome are closely linked. Each piece is developed through experimentation, using available materials and natural systems to guide both form and function.
Rather than imposing fixed structures, his work evolves through interaction with its environment, allowing natural processes to shape the final result. This creates work that is not only visual, but active, existing within the systems it reflects.
